Riya found the letter underneath her apartment door.
There was no stamp.
No envelope.
Just a folded page with her name.
Inside were five words:
Do not take the 8:20 bus.
She assumed it was a prank.
The next morning, she stood at the bus stop at 8:18.
Then she remembered the note.
Feeling foolish, she let the bus leave.
At 8:45, news spread that the bus had been involved in an accident.
Nobody died, but several passengers were injured.
Riya's hands trembled.
That evening, another letter appeared.
Call your sister tonight.
Riya and her sister had not spoken in months after an argument.
She reluctantly called.
Her sister answered while crying.
She had just lost her job and had been sitting alone for hours.
They talked until midnight.
The next day:
Take the blue folder to work.
Inside the folder was an old project proposal Riya had forgotten.
Her manager happened to request ideas for a new client that morning.
The proposal earned her a promotion.
For two weeks, letters kept appearing.
Small warnings.
Small instructions.
Each one made her life slightly better.
Then one night, a final letter arrived.
Tomorrow at 6:00 PM, go to the park and sit on the second bench.
Riya obeyed.
At exactly six, an elderly woman sat beside her.
The woman stared at Riya for a long moment.
Then smiled.
“You look exactly like I remember.”
Riya frowned.
“Do I know you?”
“Yes.”
The woman handed her an envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
It showed Riya, much older.
Riya looked up slowly.
“No.”
The woman smiled.
“Yes.”
“You're me?”
“Not exactly. Not anymore.”
Riya struggled to speak.
“Why did you send the letters?”
The older woman looked toward the sunset.
“Because I remembered receiving them.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“Most important things don’t at first.”
Riya opened the final letter.
There was only one sentence:
Stop waiting for instructions.
She looked up.
The bench beside her was empty.
No old woman.
No photograph.
No envelope.
From that day onward, the letters stopped.
At first, Riya missed them.
Then she understood.
The letters had never been about predicting her future.
They had been teaching her to pay attention to her present
